Local Roofing In Fallsington

The oldest roofs in the township

Fallsington is the old crossroads village of Falls Township, on what was the King’s Highway and is now Route 13. The Fallsington Historic District went on the National Register in 1972, and the houses in it run from the late seventeenth century through the middle of the nineteenth. It was the township’s main settlement until Levittown and Fairless Hills were built around it in the 1950s, which left a small colonial village surrounded by postwar suburbia.
Work on a house this old is careful work. Framing varies wall to wall, sheathing is narrow plank, chimneys are large and central, and previous repairs were made with whatever was to hand. We survey the structure before quoting a material, flash into masonry rather than onto it, and keep visible changes sympathetic. Falls Township issues the permit under the PA Uniform Construction Code.

Three hundred years of roof coverings on one street.

Houses built across three centuries sit side by side here, so no two roofs on the same block are built the same way underneath.

The National Register listing is federal recognition rather than a set of rules about your materials. Anything binding would come from Falls Township, so we contact the township with your address before ordering. In a village of this age a sympathetic like-for-like replacement is usually both the smoothest approval and the better-looking result.

Falls Township. Fallsington is a village within the township, not a borough, so the township handles the application and the final inspection under the Pennsylvania Uniform Construction Code. There is no county permit for residential roofing. We file the paperwork as part of the job and schedule the inspection at the end.

Slowly and by hand where it counts. We protect the walls and pointing before anything comes off, remove coverings in sections rather than sliding them down the slope, and keep fasteners out of original woodwork where we can. Any structural concern we find gets shown to you and priced before it is covered up.

Almost always, because architectural asphalt weighs less than the wood shingle or slate many of these houses were built for. The real question is the sheathing. Narrow boards with wide gaps do not give continuous nailing, so we either replace the worst of them or sheet over the whole deck before installation.
