A Schuylkill River borough that filled in between 1880 and 1900, and the roof shapes here still reflect it.
Spring City doubled and doubled again between 1880 and 1900, when the mills along the Schuylkill were running, and that is the housing you see today. Under a square mile of tight streets, two and three-story houses set close together, narrow frontages, steep roofs and porches on the fronts. Most of these roofs were slate to begin with and are now on asphalt, in some cases more than once.
Steep, tall and close together means the work is as much about access and protection as it is about shingles. We stage properly, protect what is below, and pay attention to the chimney and wall flashing that a slate-era roof depends on. The borough is its own municipality, so the roofing permit comes from Spring City Borough.

Storm damage, active leaks and fallen trees, with 24/7 phone response.
These roofs were designed around slate and steep pitch, so the chimneys, the wall junctions and the porch transitions are where asphalt replacements struggle.
Three-story borough roofs need scaffolding and proper fall protection, not a long ladder.
Brick chimneys on these houses usually need new counterflashing rather than fresh sealant.
Nearly flat porch sections belong on membrane, tied cleanly into the main slope.
Spring City Borough issues the roofing permit under the Pennsylvania Uniform Construction Code.
Same office, same crews, a short drive away.
Yes. Spring City is its own municipality and issues residential building permits directly under the Pennsylvania Uniform Construction Code. Neither Chester County nor the neighboring townships are involved. We complete the application, keep the permit posted during the work and arrange the inspection at the end.
It is the joint between the two. On these older houses the counterflashing at the brick has usually failed or was tarred over at some point. The proper repair cuts new flashing into the mortar joint, and it is best done while the surrounding shingles are off.
With staging rather than ladders, and with the neighbor’s property protected before anything comes off. We agree where the dumpster sits and how the walkways stay usable. Tight boroughs like this are routine work, but they need to be planned the day before, not improvised.
It is, and on some Spring City houses it is the right call. Real slate and synthetic slate both cost more and weigh more, so the framing has to be considered. If the budget points to asphalt, a heavy architectural shingle on a steep pitch looks appropriate and performs well.
