Open country on the western edge of the county, inside Thornbury Township. Roof replacement for exposed ridgeline houses.
The Cheyney University place name sits on the western edge of Delaware County, in Thornbury Township, close enough to the Chester County line that the boundary runs through the neighborhood. Around the campus the land is open: fields, hedgerows, Creek Road, farmhouse stock in stone and stucco, and newer houses on large lots. There is very little to slow the wind once it crosses a field.
Exposed roofs get specified differently. Higher wind-rating shingle, a nailing pattern to match, ridge and hip caps fastened for uplift rather than appearance. For houses on the Delaware County side, roofing permits are issued by Thornbury Township under the PA Uniform Construction Code.

Without neighboring houses or woods to break it, wind loads the ridge, the hips and the rake edge, and uplift is the first thing that shows.

For the Delaware County side it is Thornbury Township, under the PA Uniform Construction Code. The area sits right on the Chester County line, and there is a separate Thornbury Township over there, so the first thing we confirm is which municipality your parcel is actually in.
Because there is nothing upwind. On open ground the wind accelerates over the ridge and pulls at the caps, which are the least-fastened part of most roofs. A higher wind-rated shingle, correct nail placement and properly fastened hip and ridge caps are what change that.
That is typical of houses added onto over two centuries, and each junction between sections is a place to get right. We look at every roof-to-wall and roof-to-roof transition, price the flashing work honestly, and do not assume the whole thing has to be replaced at once.
It can be, particularly on porch roofs, bays and low-slope sections where standing-seam handles water better than shingle. For a full roof it costs more up front and lasts longer, so it comes down to how long you plan to be in the house. We will quote both honestly.
