Barren Hill by its older name, on the Wissahickon side of Whitemarsh Township. Stone houses, deep shade and mid-century singles.
Lafayette Hill was Barren Hill until the post office changed the name in 1883, after the general who camped here during the Revolution. It sits mostly in Whitemarsh Township with a small piece in Springfield Township, west of Chestnut Hill and south of Plymouth Meeting, with Germantown Pike through the middle. Parks and preserves take up a good share of the ground, and the tree cover shows on the roofs.
Shade is the defining condition here. Slopes under canopy hold moisture, grow moss and fill with debris, and no shingle fixes that on its own. We deal with drainage and ventilation as part of the work rather than as an upsell. Permits for the Whitemarsh portion are issued by Whitemarsh Township under the PA Uniform Construction Code.

Storm damage, active leaks and fallen trees, with 24/7 phone response.
Old hardwoods shade whole slopes, drop limbs in nor’easters and keep gutters and valleys loaded, which is why roofs here age unevenly from one face to the next.
Shaded slopes grow growth that lifts shingle butts and holds water against the deck.
Storm-dropped branches bruise shingles in ways that only show up as leaks later.
Older stone homes need counterflashing set into masonry joints at every roof-to-wall run.
Whitemarsh Township issues roofing permits; the small Springfield Township portion permits through Springfield.
Same office, same crews, a short drive away.
For most addresses, yes. Lafayette Hill is a postal name, and the municipality is Whitemarsh Township, which issues the permit under the Pennsylvania Uniform Construction Code. A small part of Lafayette Hill lies in Springfield Township and permits there instead. We confirm which one applies to your parcel before filing.
Moss and lichen matter more than algae does. They hold water against the covering and pry up shingle butts, which lets wind get underneath. If the shingles are still flexible, careful cleaning plus trimming back the limbs above the slope buys real time. If the mat is already soft, it is replacement time.
Yes, even when nothing is obviously broken. Impact bruises the mat under the granules and cracks the seal between courses, and both show up as leaks months later rather than immediately. We inspect, photograph what we find, and tell you plainly whether it is a few shingles or a slope.
At the walls, not in the field. Wherever a roof runs into stone, the flashing has to be counterflashed into a raked mortar joint, and on older houses that detail was often just caulked at some point. Water then travels inside the wall and appears well away from the actual entry point.
