A Pinelands corner of Medford Township on large wooded lots. Cedar shake still turns up on roofs out here.
Chairville is a Pinelands locality in Medford Township, along Chairville Road toward the lake of the same name, on large wooded lots. Medford’s oldest structures go back to the 1600s and 1700s along the former Shamong Trail, and out in this part of the township you still find cedar shake on houses, some of it original and some put on later by owners who wanted the look it gives.
Cedar needs a different conversation than asphalt. It wants airflow underneath it, it fails from the butt edge upward, and it does not tolerate debris sitting on it under pine. We will quote cedar where it suits the house and asphalt where it does not. Permits go to the Medford Township construction office under the New Jersey Uniform Construction Code.

Cedar shake under a pine canopy holds damp and debris at the butt edge, and that is precisely where the shake cups, splits and finally lets go.
Cedar checked at the butt edges and the fasteners, not from the ground.
New cedar set over a batten or mesh layer so air moves beneath.
Needles brushed off the field, because cedar rots where litter sits.

It depends on the house and on how much maintenance you want. Cedar suits an older Pinelands house and looks right on it, but it needs regular clearing and it costs considerably more. Architectural asphalt is the lower-maintenance answer, we fit it far more often, and we will price both for you.
Less than it would in the open, because shake needs to dry and a shaded roof under pine does not dry quickly. Keeping the field clear of needles and setting the shake over a ventilated layer so air moves underneath are the two things that recover the most years.
Medford Township. Chairville is a locality inside the township rather than a municipality, so the Medford Township construction office reviews the application and inspects the work under the New Jersey Uniform Construction Code. Note that Medford Lakes is a separate borough with its own office nearby.
It loads the valleys and gutters, keeps the surface damp, and starts moss. On cedar it causes rot at the butt edges; on asphalt it lifts the granule surface and eventually the course edges. Clearing valleys and trimming overhanging limbs is worth more than any material upgrade.
