A name on the road between Jacksonville and Columbus. Most Hedding houses were framed before anyone thought about attic airflow.
Hedding is a small settlement in Mansfield Township, a name on the road between Jacksonville and Columbus with farmland all around it. There is little here but houses: older frame stock, some postwar ranches, generous lots. Most of those houses were framed before anyone thought seriously about airflow, which means open rafters, soffits that are narrow or blocked with insulation, and a single gable louver at each end doing all the work.
That shortens a roof from underneath. Summer heat builds against the deck and cooks the shingle from below, and winter moisture condenses on the sheathing instead of leaving. At replacement we open real soffit intake, add ridge exhaust, and balance the two so air actually moves. Permits go to the Mansfield Township construction office under the New Jersey Uniform Construction Code.

Without intake at the soffit and exhaust at the ridge, heat and moisture stay pressed against the deck, and the shingle above it gives up years early.
Blocked or missing soffit vents opened so air can enter at the eave.
Continuous ridge vent cut in so hot air can leave the attic.
Intake and exhaust sized to each other rather than added piecemeal.

Partly. An attic with no intake at the eaves runs far hotter than one that breathes, and that heat moves down into the rooms below and up into the shingle above. Adding soffit vents and a ridge vent at replacement is cheap compared with the roof itself and makes a real difference.
Usually not on its own. Gable louvers move some air across the top of the attic but leave the deck near the eaves stagnant, which is exactly where winter condensation and summer heat do damage. Low intake at the soffit paired with high exhaust at the ridge is what actually moves air.
The Mansfield Township construction office, under the New Jersey Uniform Construction Code. Hedding is a community inside Mansfield Township rather than a municipality, so there is nothing separate to file. We pull the permit under our New Jersey registration and meet the inspector when the roof is finished.
Ridge vent normally needs the ridge shingles off, so it is far cheaper to do during a replacement. Soffit intake can often be added on its own from below. If your roof has years left, we will tell you to do the soffit work now and the ridge work later.
