Local Roofing In Mullica Hill

Two housing stocks, one township

Main Street is the old half. Most of the village went up between the 1780s and the 1830s, four of the town’s first churches among it on South Main, with Victorian storefronts added after the Civil War. Those roofs run to steep pitches, dormers, tight valleys and metal over porches. The district joined the National Register in 1991 and Harrison Township adopted it locally the year after. Outside it, Cider Press Estates, Willowbrook Farms, Cherry Lawn and Brookside at Harrison hold the newer colonials.
On village houses we work in matching materials: slate and synthetic slate, cedar, standing-seam metal on porches and bays, and proper metal flashing in the valleys. On the newer developments it is architectural asphalt. Visible exterior work in the district goes to the Historic Preservation Commission for a certificate of appropriateness, and the permit itself comes from the Harrison Township construction office.

Roofing In Mullica Hill

One township, two completely different roofs.

A house from the 1820s on Main Street and a 1998 colonial on a two-acre lot need different materials, different flashing and different approvals before anyone starts.

Visible exterior changes in the village need a certificate of appropriateness first.

Slate and metal

Village roofs carry slate, cedar and standing-seam porch work, not only shingle.

Valleys and flashing

Old rooflines have complex valleys, and that is where the real leaks start.

Mullica Hill FAQ

Common questions

Do I need approval to reroof a house in the Mullica Hill Historic District?

Do I need approval to reroof a house in the Mullica Hill Historic District?

If the change is visible, yes. Harrison Township’s Historic Preservation Commission issues certificates of appropriateness for exterior alteration and replacement, and the district ordinance treats roof shape and pitch as part of the picture. Exact replacement in the same material and design is handled as ordinary repair. We tell you which side of that line your roof falls on before you apply.

The Harrison Township construction office, under the New Jersey Uniform Construction Code. Gloucester County is not involved in roof permits at all. The application needs the contractor’s New Jersey home improvement contractor registration, which we carry, and we handle the filing and the inspection rather than leaving it with you.

If the slate itself is sound and the failures are at flashing, valleys or a scattering of broken pieces, repair is usually the honest answer and it buys decades. When the field is genuinely spent, synthetic slate keeps the look and weighs less. Switching to asphalt changes the appearance, which matters if the slope faces the street in the district.

That joint is the usual suspect on a low-slope porch, and shingles do not belong there. The fix is a proper membrane, EPDM or TPO, carried up the wall and terminated behind counterflashing rather than caulked to the siding. We inspect the deck underneath too, because a slow leak at that wall has often been soaking framing for years.
