A mid-century Deptford Township neighborhood grown into its trees. Roofing that accounts for shade, moss and sixty years of leaf drop.
Oak Valley is a planned neighborhood inside Deptford Township, laid out when the township’s population more than doubled in the nineteen sixties. The houses are consistent: ranches and split-levels on regular lots, modest pitches, attached garages. What has changed is everything around them. The street trees planted with the development are now tall, and they put most of these roofs in shade for a good part of the day.
Shade is the condition we work around here. Moss and algae hold on where a slope never fully dries, gutters fill with leaf litter, and debris dams water at valleys. We clear and correct all of that as part of a replacement, and we permit the work through the Deptford Township construction office under the New Jersey Uniform Construction Code.

Heavy tree cover keeps north and east slopes damp, and constant damp is what lets moss lift shingle edges and hold water against the mat.
Damp shaded slopes grow moss that lifts shingle edges and holds water there.
Leaf litter dams valleys and gutters, backing water under the shingle course.
Branches scour granules off shingles and drop the debris that starts the problem.

Yes. Moss holds moisture against the shingle and slowly lifts the edges, which lets wind get underneath. Scraping it damages granules, so we treat it and, when the roof is due anyway, replace with algae-resistant shingle and trim the limbs feeding the shade.
Deptford Township does. Oak Valley is a neighborhood within the township rather than its own municipality, so the township construction office issues and inspects the roof permit under the New Jersey Uniform Construction Code. We file it and meet the inspector.
It becomes one. Once the gutter is packed, water backs up over the drip edge and into the eave, and in January that same water freezes there. Correct drip edge, ice-and-water underlayment at the eaves, and a gutter you can actually keep clear all help.
We can, and sometimes that is the right call on a simple gable. But the two slopes weather differently and a new plane next to a worn one rarely matches, so we will show you both numbers and let you decide with the age of the whole roof in view.
