Fort Myers is the county seat and the oldest city here, strung along the Caloosahatchee with McGregor Boulevard and its royal palms running southwest. It has four city-designated historic districts: the downtown River District, Dean Park with homes from 1916 through the mid-twenties, Edison Park from the mid-twenties, and Seminole Park. Dunbar, east of the centre, has its own long history from the railroad era.
If your house sits in one of those districts, a reroof is not just a permit. The city Historic Preservation Commission requires a Certificate of Review for exterior work before a permit can be issued, and most homeowners find that out the hard way.
