The median Lansdowne single family house dates to about 1939 and roughly half the stock is twins. Turrets, dormers and porch roofs make for complicated rooflines.
Lansdowne began as a summer retreat for Philadelphians and grew into a commuter borough on the rail line, which is why the housing is what it is. Queen Anne Victorians sit alongside Colonials, Tudors, Dutch Colonials and American Foursquares, with the median single family house dating to around 1939 and about half of the stock built as twins. Turrets, wraparound porches and multiple dormers are common.
A roof with that many changes of plane is mostly transitions, and transitions are where water gets in. We rebuild valleys in metal, reflash every dormer cheek and porch-to-wall junction, and repair original slate where it is still sound. The roofing permit is issued by Lansdowne Borough under the Pennsylvania Uniform Construction Code.

On a Queen Anne or a Foursquare the open field is rarely the problem, because the leaks come from dormer cheeks, valley intersections and where a porch roof dies into the wall.
Step flashing up a dormer side wall has to be woven in course by course.
Sound original slate is often worth keeping, with new flashing and fasteners instead.
Low-slope porch roofs need membrane and flashing carried up behind the wall cladding.
Lansdowne Borough issues the roofing permit and inspects the job, and we file for it.

Lansdowne Borough does, under the Pennsylvania Uniform Construction Code. Boroughs in Pennsylvania are their own permitting authority, so nothing goes through Delaware County for a residential re-roof. We submit the application, post the permit at the property, and coordinate the inspection at completion.
Yes, though it takes cut-and-fit work rather than full courses, and the material has to be flexible enough to follow the curve. Slate and cedar were the originals on many Lansdowne turrets and both can be repaired in kind. We price that section separately because the labor is different.
It can be, and plenty of Lansdowne homes have made that change. Slate is heavier, so we check the framing either way. Before recommending a switch we look at whether the existing slate has service life left, because replacing sound slate is money spent for no gain.
Dormer side walls rely on step flashing layered with each shingle course, plus counterflashing tucked under the siding. If a previous crew used one long piece of metal or sealed the joint with caulk, it fails within a few years. Rebuilding it properly usually solves what repeated patching did not.
