A wooded southern township off Newark and Chesterville Roads, where the trees over the house do more damage than any storm.
New London covers rural ground in the southern corner of the county, with Route 896 on Newark Road and Route 841 on Chesterville Road carrying most of the traffic. Elk Creek drains it, and Avon Grove serves the schools. Houses sit on wooded acre-plus lots in Elk Ridge Farms, Meadowcroft, Surrey Hills and Willow Ponds, with older farm stock scattered between them and the village of New London near the center.
Wooded lots are pleasant to live on and hard on shingles. Debris sits in valleys, moss takes hold on north slopes, limbs abrade the surface, and animals find soft fascia. We clear, inspect and then decide, because tree-driven damage is often localized rather than general. Permits for roof work are issued by New London Township under the Pennsylvania Uniform Construction Code.

Shade keeps slopes from drying out, falling limbs scrape granules loose, and valley debris holds water long enough for the underlayment to give up.
Branches rubbing the roof in wind strip granules along a narrow line.
Moss establishes on shaded slopes and lifts shingle edges as it thickens.
Squirrels and raccoons open soft fascia and roof edges on wooded lots.

From the ground you usually cannot. Impact can crack sheathing and fracture shingles well outside the visible dent, and the leak may not show for months. We get on the roof, check the deck from the attic side too, and photograph what we find so you have documentation if a claim makes sense.
Yes, and lot size and setting do not change the requirement. New London Township administers the Pennsylvania Uniform Construction Code and issues the permit for residential roof replacement, and there is no county building permit to worry about. We file it and handle the inspection at the end.
Reduce the shade where you reasonably can, keep valleys and gutters clear so slopes drain, and specify an algae-resistant shingle with copper or zinc granules at replacement. Zinc strips near the ridge help on stubborn north slopes. Pressure washing is the one thing to avoid, since it strips granules.
On a replacement, yes. We clear the gutters as part of the work and check that the hangers and pitch are sound, since new edge metal and old sagging gutters do not cooperate. If the gutters themselves are finished we will tell you and quote them separately rather than folding it in quietly.
