Gloucester City’s rowhomes are among the oldest housing in Camden County, and most still carry a brick chimney the roof has to seal around.
Gloucester City sits on the Delaware across from South Philadelphia, and its housing predates almost everything else in the county. Brick and frame rows, twins and small singles run through Cloversdale, Gloucester Heights, Highland Park and Newbold. Many still have their original chimneys, sometimes two of them. Add wind coming straight off the open river and you get a roof whose weak points are all vertical.
Chimneys get counterflashing cut into the brick, and a proper cricket where the width calls for one, instead of a smear of roof cement. Rakes and eaves get starter strip and a tight nailing pattern because of the exposure. Roofing permits here come from the Gloucester City construction office under the New Jersey Uniform Construction Code.

Mortar joints that have weathered for a century will not hold sealant, and gusts off the Delaware find any rake or ridge that was nailed short.
Metal cut into the mortar joint outlasts anything troweled onto old brick.
A wide chimney needs a framed diverter so water is not held against the brick.
River exposure means perimeter fastening decides whether shingles stay put.

Not always. More often the counterflashing was never cut into the mortar, or the joint was filled with roof cement that has since cracked. We can tell you whether the masonry itself is sound. If the brick and crown are failing, new flashing alone will not hold.
The city. Residential roofing permits are issued by the Gloucester City construction office under the New Jersey Uniform Construction Code, and Camden County has no role in it. We submit the application, keep the permit posted and arrange the inspection when the roof is complete.
Yes, and it is usually a fastening and perimeter problem rather than the shingle itself. Open exposure to the Delaware drives uplift at the rakes and eaves first. A proper starter course, six-nail patterns on exposed slopes and a high wind-rated shingle change the outcome.
We find out at tear-off and tell you before anything new goes on. Board sheathing of that age often has gaps, splits or sections softened near old leaks. Sometimes it needs a few boards, sometimes a full overlay. Either way you see it before it gets covered.
