A glass-factory borough with about a third of its land in woods and parkland. Shade is the thing that shortens roofs here.
Clayton was Fislertown until a glass factory arrived in the 1850s and turned it into a working borough. The oldest housing sits close to Delsea Drive and the old rail line: narrow lots, two-story frames, front porches, steep gables. Roughly a third of the borough is parkland, including a large share of the Glassboro Wildlife Management Area, so a good many of these roofs sit under mature canopy.
Shade is the local variable. Maze Roofing clears valleys, checks north slopes for moss and organic growth, and specifies algae-resistant shingle where the canopy is not going anywhere. The Borough of Clayton construction office issues the roofing permit under the New Jersey Uniform Construction Code.
The full Maze Roofing range, residential and commercial, from the local team.
Shingle, tile, metal and flat roofing for homes and townhomes across the area.
Shingle, tile, metal, flat and TPO. Managed from tear-off to cleanup.
Flat, TPO and metal systems, with maintenance programs that protect the asset.
Storm damage, active leaks and fallen trees, with 24/7 phone response.
Slopes that never get direct sun stay wet for days after rain, and that is all moss and algae need to establish themselves.
Moss thickens, lifts shingle edges and lets wind and water get underneath.
Leaf and needle packs dam valleys and hold standing water against the shingle.
Factory-era homes on narrow lots run steep, with little room to stage a tear-off.

Same office, same crews, a short drive away.
Gently, and never with a pressure washer, which strips granules and voids most warranties. A low-pressure treatment and a soft removal is the right approach, followed by clearing the valleys. If the canopy is staying, algae-resistant shingle on the next replacement is the only thing that actually keeps it from returning.
With the borough. The Borough of Clayton construction office issues roofing permits under the New Jersey Uniform Construction Code, and Gloucester County has no role in it. Maze Roofing pulls the permit before the tear-off and arranges the inspection with the borough once the new roof is on.
Trimming back is usually enough and it is worth doing before the work rather than after. Getting a few feet of clearance over the roof plane cuts the debris load, lets the slope dry, and stops limbs from scrubbing granules off. Full removal is a bigger decision than a roof needs.
It is something to plan, not a problem. On these narrow borough lots we work out staging, dumpster placement and debris control before the first shingle comes off, and we talk to the neighbor if we need a few feet. It is a scheduling question rather than an extra cost in most cases.
