Local Roofing In Whitemarsh

Stone houses under original slate

Whitemarsh spent the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries as English estates and limestone quarries, and the good bones survived. Lafayette Hill, Barren Hill, Spring Mill and Miquon hold stone and stucco houses on steep ground above the Schuylkill, and a lot of the older roofs are still slate or were slate until someone converted them. Twentieth-century infill fills in the gaps between.
Steep and heavy is normal work for us. Slate repair and matched replacement where the field is worth keeping, cedar where cedar belongs, copper or lead-coated flashing let into stone rather than caulked onto it, and architectural asphalt with proper ice-and-water where slate is gone for good. Whitemarsh Township issues the permit under the PA Uniform Construction Code.

Roofing In Whitemarsh

Masonry and roofing meet badly when rushed.

On stone and stucco houses the joint between wall and roof is the weak point, and sealant applied to the surface never holds through a freeze-thaw winter.

Storm damage in Whitemarsh?
24/7 emergency leak and tarp response.

Slate underlayment failure

The slate often outlives the felt and nails holding it to the deck.

Surface-caulked flashing

Sealant smeared on stone instead of counterflashing cut in fails within a few winters.

Steep-slope access

Pitches here need staging and fall protection, which is part of doing the work right.

Whitemarsh permitting

Whitemarsh FAQ

Common questions

Is it cheaper to convert my slate roof to shingles?

Is it cheaper to convert my slate roof to shingles?

Up front, usually yes. Long term it depends on whether the slate is sound, because good slate repaired properly can run decades more while asphalt starts a new twenty-five-year clock. We give you both numbers and the condition report behind them.

That is nearly always flashing, not the roof surface. Counterflashing has to be cut into a mortar joint and lapped over the step flashing; caulk on the face of the stone buys a season or two at most. It is a repair we do often here.

For a small repair often not, for a replacement yes. Whitemarsh Township’s code office makes that call under the PA Uniform Construction Code, and we ask them rather than assume. When a permit is required we file it and schedule the inspection as part of the job.

Usually close, not perfect. We source salvaged or new slate in the right size and thickness, and on a visible slope we will move sound original pieces to the front and put the new material where it shows least. Color settles in over a few seasons.
