Wooded township land along the Perkiomen, where shade, leaf fall and slow-drying shingles do more damage than any single storm.
Lower Frederick runs along the Perkiomen Creek between Schwenksville and the Frederick townships, with Spring Mount and Zieglerville anchoring the settled parts and a lot of tree canopy in between. Older farmhouse stock sits next to homes built during the township’s growth spurt in the 1990s. Many roofs have a north face that barely sees sun from November to March.
Shaded roofs stay wet, and wet roofs grow moss and algae streaking and shed granules early. We clear valleys, correct attic ventilation, and use algae-resistant architectural shingle where canopy is heavy. Roofing permits are issued and inspected by Lower Frederick Township under the PA Uniform Construction Code.

Leaf litter in valleys, moss on the shaded slope and debris in the gutters hold moisture against the shingle long after the rest of the roof has dried.
Shaded north slopes hold moisture, which feeds moss at the laps and dark algae streaking.
Leaf packs in valleys back water up under the shingle during heavy rain.
Balanced intake and ridge exhaust keeps the deck dry and slows shingle aging.
Lower Frederick Township issues the roofing permit and performs the inspection.

Often yes. If the shingle still has granule coverage and the mats are sound, a careful treatment and better ventilation buy years. Moss that has lifted the shingle laps, or moss on a roof already past twenty years, is a different conversation, and we will say so honestly.
The township does. Lower Frederick Township handles roofing permits and inspections under the Pennsylvania Uniform Construction Code. Montgomery County is not involved. We file the application, meet the township’s requirements, and leave you with the closed permit and the manufacturer warranty registration.
Trimming branches back from the roof plane helps more than almost anything else. It cuts leaf load in the valleys, lets the shaded slope dry, and removes the limbs that scuff granules in a wind event. You do not need to remove trees, just get them off the roof.
Architectural asphalt shingle is the default, with ice-and-water at eaves and valleys. Where a farmhouse has a shallow porch roof or a bay, standing-seam metal often outlasts shingle on that section. Slate and cedar appear on the oldest houses, and we will tell you whether repair or replacement makes sense.
